Young Men - Summer Fun

My calling as the YM's president definitely takes a ton of time, but we've been having a great time together. I'm learning to really love these young men and we are slowly getting them to understand the importance of the Priesthood. I definitely want us to do better with Scouting and Duty to God, but we are making progress (slowly).

We've had a really great summer together so far and here are some highlights of just the last week.

  • Service Project with the Thomas family. They needed help putting their playset together, so the Priests Quorum rallied to give them a hand. We thought he was further along than he was, we had a ton of work to do, but we have fun. Here is a photo of our work:

On Friday night, we held our first annual Book of Mormon Read-a-Thon. It was a ton of fun. We had 14 boys show up and we read up to Alma 1 together. In reality, we read up to about 2 Nephi 10 together, plus we read a few of the chapters towards the end of 2 Nephi (we skipped Isaiah). After that, we just listened to the scriptures over the speakers. Here are some of the great things that happened on Friday night (all night - I didn't go to sleep until after the boys left at 6:30am):
  • Read - we did a bunch of this - probably 3-4 hours of reading and with 14 adolescent boys, that's pretty good
  • Tackle Football - all of the young men enjoyed playing this!
  • Basketball - we played 5 on 5 half-court in my driveway for a while, then we played "knock-out" from 2-3am. It was fun
  • Pool - tons of pool
  • Ping-Pong - the kids enjoyed this
  • Cards - games - we had fun
  • Smore's around the campfire - we told mission stories, funny stories, and just had fun around the fire for about an hour
  • Gene Hardy came at about 7pm and taught about his favorite scripture stories for about 30min
  • Tye & Jan Chadwick brought Mtn Dew and spoke for a few minutes
  • The Cormack's brought some treats, complete with scriptures to read and we enjoyed opening them up together. Very cool surprise. Ashtyn, McKenna, and Alexa put the treats together and we all enjoyed them.
  • Shawn Murray came by at around 11pm and taught for about 45min. It was like having a fireside with the boys and we had a great discussion together. Very fun!
  • The Bishop took some time to teach us as well, starting at about 3am. He had some great things to share and it was really nice.
  • We did have a couple of issues that came up: Trenton Chapman got sick and threw up around 11am. Jonathan Knight took him home. Then, Connor and Ethan wondered off and took a walk around 3am. We had to find them. They apologized for not letting us know.
  • Overall - it was a really fun evening. I didn't take any photos myself, but I know that others did. I will try to get some of them.
