The flight to Mexico was pretty uneventful - the most exciting thing to happen was getting to write in my journal and update a few things on the flight. We also met a single girl who was going to Belize to spend the week with her parent who retired there. She was really nice and it was fun to sit with her.
The airport was CRAZY! There were so many people and most of the planes seemed to land at the same time. I thought it would take a long time for us, which it did, but we actually came out of it okay. There were others who really spent a long time in the airport! Here's a look at the outside of the airport in Cancun:
We located our "Lomas Travel" agent quickly and we jumped on the bus towards the hotel. I was really hoping that we would make it to our room before dark, but it didn't happen. We got to the hotel quickly, but they took a VERY long time checking us into the hotel and we lost an hour at check-in. What's worse is that I lost my camera! I left it on the seat next to me on the bus and even though I called within minutes of getting off the bus, the camera "magically" disappeared - the bus driver stole it and probably sold it! I'm VERY upset about it - even more bummed that we lost ALL of the photos on the SD card! I plan to make a claim on the travel insurance - hopefully they will give me back ALL of the cost of the camera ($1000).
However, once I got over that (which took a couple of days actually) we had a great time! The room was everything we hoped it would be and the "all-inclusive" concept is fantastic. We ate and drank WAY too much, but loved it. Here are some photos from the first night (photos of the hotel and our room):
After spending a while exploring the hotel and LOVING the atmosphere, we facetimed with the kids and let them see some of the hotel. Obviously, they were jealous - we missed them, but it was time for Mom and Dad to have some time alone - much needed time alone!
For Dinner, we tried the French-Mexican fusion restaurant, Maria-Marie. We arrived early and we were seated immediately, thankfully. They actually recommend reservations for this restaurant, but given that it was our first night, we didn't know. But we loved the dinner. Here are some photos to prove just how awesome it was!
Amy's salad was a chicken-lettuce salad:
I had the scallops that I heard recommended by one of the guests as we walked in. They were great:
For dessert, I had the triple creme brule (which was the best I had ever had - berry, chocolate and vanilla) and Amy had a melody of several things. On this night, my dessert turned out the best (but that wasn't always the case).
After dinner, we decided to stay up and watch the 9:45pm show. It was the only show that we watched all week. It was pretty good, but not good enough to have us return for more. We preferred other things the rest of the week...There was a "fire" scene in this first show that was a little disturbing, which is why we didn't like it too much! The lady doing the silk ropes was cool, but the pole dancing and climbing wasn't as impressive even it if was pretty cool as well.
We absolutely LOVED the swan we had earlier on our bed, but when we returned, we had another surprise on our bed, which was awesome!
The Royal at Playa del Carmen really knows how to take care of their guests!! Amy and I loved the cool towel and rose arrangements on the bed. They made for very romantic moments together!
We finally went to bed around 11:30pm - exhasted in ready for bed! We planned to sleep in a ton!!
