Two of my favorite weekends of the year are in April and October - General Conference! I love the opportunity to step away from the to-do lists and the chaos of life and to just listen to the prophets' teachings, contemplating and pondering about changes and can and should make in my life. I'm very much looking forward to hearing the great words of the prophets. As expected, they did not disappoint - I really enjoyed the talks! I must admit that my favorite session was the Saturday afternoon session - mostly because I tuned in on my iPhone and mowed the lawn while I listened. I seemed to be able to pay much better attention since I was physically doing something to keep me "busy", but my mind was able to focus and really take the messages to heart. Here are some of my favorite talks from the weekend:
- Elder Holland - as expected, he gave another incredible talk. This time, his talk was on fast offerings and taking care of the poor. His delivery of the message is always fantastic.
- Elder Bednar - great talk on missionary work and the importance of doing it not because we "have" to or feel obligated to, but because we should want to - being driven by our burning testimonies
- President Monson - his talk on Sunday morning was very moving. His main message was that it is not enough to walk "where" Christ walked, but we should walk "as" Christ walked. Very nice analogy that really hit home.
- Entire Priesthood session - it really hit home for me. Great talks on the importance of fatherhood, the importance of being a righteous priesthood holder, of doing our duty and serving others. President Eyring's talk really hit home as he shared experiences of his youth and discussed some of his childhood heros that really shaped him into who he is today.
We also had Ryan and Jennica with little Ben over for the weekend. They showed up right at the end of the Saturday afternoon session yesterday. They have officially moved to Colorado and Ryan starts his new job tomorrow morning. We are so excited that they have moved out here. It's great to have more family in the area. Melinda is even considering a move out here to be near me and Adam. I would really love to have her and it would be great if she could pull the trigger on a change like that in her life.
Right after Ryan showed up yesterday, we did slip out to the golf course at Harmony and we played 9 holes. It was really fun. I played pretty well, but my consistency needs some work. Here's a shot of Ryan right after his shot on the 3rd hole. I was on the green, near the hole, in 3 on this par 5. I'm pretty sure I ended up with a 2-putt par.
Tonight, after conference, we had a great time together as a family. Honestly, these are some of my favorite hours of the weekend. No responsibilities and just some solid time with the family to laugh, play and have fun with each other. We played games inside, played tag outside, let the kids wrestle, played some basketball and just had fun. We also waited for the 2nd annual pumpkin wagon to arrive. This has turned out to be a great tradition. A hay ride through the neighborhood with free pumpkins and a great time together. Here are a few shots of the dec'd-out hay ride. We ended the night with come cider and cookies. During the hay ride, Aubrey, Alyssa and Jantzen all cuddled up with me - I felt like the king of the planet. I really love my family!
