It has been an incredible weekend - I'm a little disappointed that its already over! I've really enjoyed it though. My Dad brought his financee to meet the family - Robin Wallace. I was a little surprised to see how tall she was - 5'12" according to her - for the rest of us, thats 6 feet tall. She's a great lady with an excellent sense of humor. We had fun with her all weekend long. We scheduled a very busy weekend, and she got to see the crazy life that is my family, but it was fun (except for one part, which I will detail later). Here goes:
Friday - pretty normal day at work - I was hoping to get a bunch more done, but was stuck at the end of the day realizing that I needed to be home to welcome Dad and Robin and I had hardly finished anything. But, there's always another week.... Anyway, I got home a little early, around 3pm and they arrived shortly before dinner. Adam got to my house minutes before they did. We enjoyed giving them the tour, playing some pool and enjoying a great dinner. We ate on the back porch and really enjoyed ourselves. After dinner, Dad decided to take Robin out in the tandem Kayak on the pond. Even though it was lightning in all directions, it was pretty clear above us, so I agreed. They didn't go out for long, but they went out and had a blast. Even Aubrey enjoyed a little trip around the pond with Papaw! Here's some photos of the Robin and Dad kayaking:
After Kayaking, we enjoyed "dough-boys" and marshmallows around the fire and the beautiful lightning storms in the distance. It was a very beautiful evening. Mary showed up around 9:30pm, straight from the airport - she had been visiting friends. It was really great to see her again - she's super awesome with Adam. Too bad I totally lose my temper with my brother. I have no idea why I get so out of control with him. I'm afraid that Mary has seen my "bad-side" multiple times now. I've decided that I'm not going to let that happen again - ever again! I'm done with that! I will just concede to Adam and let him shine - he needs to right now. I hope he can keep Mary around. She's a really great person!
Saturday - an incredible day! We had a great breakfast and then we got everyone ready to go to Estes Park. I was pretty surprised with how well things were going in the morning. The goal was to leave by 10am. We made really good progress and we were ready to go by 9:45am. But, Adam and Mary were late and didn't show up until closer to 10:15am. No big deal, but then after a stop for gas, it took us a while to get going again. This is when I lost my temper. I asked Adam to follow me up to Estes Park to make sure we stayed together, but he seemed to want to do his own thing - he wouldn't follow me. It was driving me NUTS - I was so angry! It was like he was purposely not willing to follow me. So, I got mad and even hung up on him. In retrospect, I was being pretty silly for getting so mad, but to this day, I still don't know why he refused to follow me! Anyway, I decided to be the bigger man - I followed him. I calmed down and then I apologized to him. After that, the day went pretty good. Like I said - I still feel bad about this. I need to do better!
In Estes, we drove straight up to the Alberta Falls trailhead for a fun hike. The traffic was NUTS - there was a TON of people on that mountain. We couldn't find any parking, but we eventually got a couple of spots on the side of the road. We were later given "warnings" for parking where we shouldn't, but it all worked out! Wehn we arrived, we stopped at a rest area and Dad got to hold his namesake - Jarrett "Russell" Brown. Here's a great photo:
The hike was awesome, even if it was terribly slow. Even my kids were getting bored at the slow pace of the hike. We expected Robin to have a difficult time getting up the hill, but I was a little surprised at how hard it was for Adam. He really needs to get in shape - I would HATE to be that out of shape - it would not make me happy. He has a very long hill to climb to get into shape - I hope he choses to do so!
We enjoyed a little picnic at the top and the scenery was amazing. It helped me to calm down and it brought me peace. I really love being with my family up in the mountains. It is definitely my HAPPY place!! Here are some great photos of the hike as well as the wildlife we saw in Estes Park - awesome day!
